Salt of the Earth movie poster Wednesday 25 January: Joyce Wieland, Reason Over Passion

Directed by Joyce Wieland, 1969. 16mm film, digital file. 83:40 mins. Courtesy of the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre.

In 1969, Joyce Wieland completed a feature-length experimental film, titled Reason over Passion / La raison avant la passion. It was inspired by a speech given by the Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, in which the phrase "reason over passion" was meant to be a strategic goal for Canada's future and the possibility of some sort of unity between French and English communities. The film consists of primarily degraded footage of landscapes shot from vehicles moving across the country; meanwhile, 537 computer-generated permutations of the film's title appear like subtitles-the letters are scrambled over and over again, undermining the meaning of this famous quotation.
