Watch Lucie Chan's upcoming exhibition come to life and contribute your story to an ongoing creative project.

KWAG is honoured to host Lucie Chan as a visiting artist in tandem with her upcoming solo exhibition, How to be 57. In Chan’s practice, she often works one-on-one with members of the public to create a diverse range of works inspired by their stories. During her stay in Kitchener, Chan will hold open studio hours for Interactions with Strangers. Members of the public are invited to contribute to an inventory of personal histories and myriad definitions of community that will inform a new body of work. This work will be included in the publication of special artist’s booklet that will be available at KWAG in 2019.

The following is a list of questions to consider prior to signing up to be a part of this project:

  • To what lengths have you gone to imagine someone else's reality that is vastly different from your own?
  • What is a recent and memorable time when you felt most surprised by your ability to change in order to accommodate the needs of a stranger?
  • How do varying contexts in the public realm change how you interact with someone unfamiliar to you?
  • What personal obstacles get in the way when faced with having to visualize the emotional/intellectual place of someone you don't know very well?
  • What boundaries do you most often fall back on when interacting with a stranger?
  • Are you willing to have your voice recorded, reading a short narrative of another person's real life struggles?

Interviews will last between 30 – 45 minutes. All participants in the project will receive a copy of the forthcoming artist’s booklet. To schedule a time within the Open Studio Hours to meet with the artist, kindly contact Crystal Mowry, Senior Curator at cmowry@kwag.on.ca or 519-579-5860 x 215.
