Following the successful launch of Culture Talks on Creating Culturally Active Spaces, this next series features visionary speakers whose professional practices embrace the integration of art in architecture and the environment. The challenge of creating buildings in harmony with the land is driving us towards a future of innovative collaborations and captivating architectural designs.

A residency-based contemporary art venue, Fogo Island Arts provides support and space for artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, curators, designers and thinkers from around the world. Alexandra McIntosh, Director of Programs and Exhibitions, will share her experience organizing residencies, exhibitions, publications and events on this remote island off the coast of Newfoundland where remarkable studio architecture merges with the landscape.

In collaboration with Nicolaus Schafhausen, she oversees FIA’s artist residencies, exhibitions, publications and events, as well as the development of strategic programs and partnerships. Her projects with FIA include establishing an annual series of socially and politically engaged film, and a residency dedicated to arts writing. She is co-editor of Fogo Island Arts’ publication series (FIA/Sternberg Press) and has contributed writings on art and architecture to numerous publications. Prior to joining FIA in 2015, McIntosh was a curator at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery, Calgary, and Program Manager, Visual Arts, at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Originally from Montreal, she was Coordinator of Special Projects and Cultural Affairs at Concordia University, and Editor of CCA Online at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA). She holds a BFA in Studio Arts and Art History from Concordia University and a Masters in the History and Theory of Architecture from McGill University. She is also a member of the artist collective Centre de recherche urbaine de Montréal (CRUM).

Please note that while Nicolaus Schafhuasen was originally scheduled to co-present at this Culture Talks event, he will no longer be able to attend for personal reasons. Thank you for your understanding.

Ontario Association of Architects members are eligible to report their attendance at Culture Talks as one hour of structured learning towards their Continuing Education Program learning hours requirements. Proof of attendance will be issued by Grand Valley Society of Architects.

Please note that tickets to Culture Talks events are non-refundable.
