Position Summary
The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery is seeking contract Art Instructors to join our team and deliver studio-based and exhibition-related programming throughout the year. Art Instructors are responsible for assisting with program planning and delivering hands-on workshops and courses. 

The Art Instructor position is ideal for working professional artists or art educators who are interested in engaging with the Gallery and contributing their talent to the community. Flexible, part-time hours make it possible to balance this position with studio-time. Hours will vary according to week and season, though every effort is made to provide Art Instructors with regular
work throughout the year.
 

Art Instructors work in the following areas:

KWAG School and Education Programs
School Programs at the gallery offer unique opportunities for students to connect to the world of art and ideas as well as to learn directly from original works of art and the artistic process of living and historical artists. Designed to relate to current exhibitions as well as support the visual arts curriculum, KWAG School Programs emphasize an interactive approach to learning about art and are delivered both at the Gallery and offsite in the classroom. Programs offsite are usually 1 hour in length per classroom, programs at the gallery are 2 hours and include a one-hour tour and one-hour studio workshop. KWAG School Programs are delivered regularly throughout the year. Our peak time is during the annual Expressions exhibition of student art (typically in late winter/spring). Education programs may also be delivered to non-school-based organizations,
such as Girl Guides of Canada, etc.

Studio Programs
Art Instructors have the opportunity to facilitate courses for public workshops, as well as for the following programs:

Adult Workshops –3 hour one-day courses, Fall Winter, Spring terms
Kid’s Classes – 6-8 week courses, Fall, Winter, Spring terms
March Break Camp – 1 week camp program during March Break
Summer Art Camp – 6 week summer program, July - August
 

Family Programs
Art Instructors play an integral role in this area of programming. Family Sundays occur on the first Sunday of each month and other specialized Family Workshops occasionally occur on Saturdays throughout the year. Hands-on art workshops are components of both days’ programming. 

Community Outreach
The Gallery delivers hands-on art-making workshops at community organizations in the region for all ages, either at the Gallery or off-site. Community partners include but are not limited to: The City of Kitchener, Autism Ontario, The Family Centre, and Waterloo Family Network.


Desired Qualifications
• Degree or studies in Arts Education, Fine Arts, Art History, or related field;
• 1 year teaching experience (formal or informal settings); Or suitable combination of Education and Work experience;
• Ability to work in and teach a wide range of media;
• Demonstrated ability to create programs in the visual arts, for diverse audiences, and
using diverse delivery methods including virtual presentation
• Knowledge of public art galleries/museum field and practice;
• Excellent communication and writing skills;
• Ability to work independently and within deadlines;
• Ability to interact with public in a positive, enthusiastic, and professional manner;
• Ability to facilitate creative discussion and experimentation relating to artistic process;
• Working knowledge of contemporary art practice;
• Able to work flexible hours and must be available during the day throughout the week
(especially Wednesday through Friday and on weekends);
• Current Vulnerable Sector Police check required.
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a vehicle an asset;
• Knowledge of Ontario visual arts curriculum and positive classroom management skills;
an asset
• Exhibition history or evidence of intent to exhibit work; an asset
