About the Workshop

Dr. Rouse has been artfully hosting custom-made “wordless" workshops across some urban areas in Ontario since 2017. These workshops enable participants to broaden their horizon towards languages and accessibility in various fields such as education, research, arts, and community.  Dr. Rouse's interactive workshop at KWAG will explore how we create a language of movement through dance using emotions and thoughts— without use of any signed or spoken languages. After finding an inspiring theme together, participants each will create, perform and interpret their movement stories. The relaxed interactive workshop will last up to three hours on Thursday, February 29 at 6pm.

About the Facilitator

While based in Durham and Greater Toronto Area, Dr. Jenelle Rouse is a Black Deaf Tkaronto (Toronto)-born realistic dreamer. Leading an unconventional life, she is an educator (currently a winter-term professor), independent non-traditional researcher, “behind the scene” member of relatable organizations, and body-movement artist. Per the latter, Jenelle is a creator of Multi-Lens Existence where it equips her to explore and experiment with different mediums to illuminate stories and information, often without any reliance on words, sound, and/or music.

This professional exploration has begun since 2006 where Jenelle choreographed and/or performed live artworks Talking Movement, Withered Tree, Perceptions, Home: Body, Hear Feel See What, Proud, Multi-Lens Existence’s Chaotic Expressions, and most recently research-based performance called Wavering In and Out. She also performed in a short dance film, Perceptions in 2015.  The experience led to her involvement in a variety of arts-related sectors (e.g., Tangled Arts, Centre[3], VibraFusionLab, Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf’s Deaf Culture Centre, Bodies in Translation, and more).
