If you're wondering where to find funding, studio space, places to exhibit or sell your artwork, how to write an artist statement and approach tax season, you’re not alone—the Canadian art world can be confusing and overwhelming. In this workshop series, we will guide you through essential aspects such as portfolio development, identifying funding opportunities and enhancing your career as an artist. We invite you to join us and equip yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to confidently navigate your artistic journey.

Finding Spaces and Funding
21 January

This workshop focuses on finding studio space in the Waterloo Region for artists and exploring funding avenues, including grants, foundation support, and sponsorship opportunities.

Facilitators: Eva Hellreich (ArtsBuild Ontario), Helena Ciuciura (ArtsBuild Ontario), Shannon Lee (ArtsBuild Ontario), and Isabella Stefaneseu.

Navigating Opportunities
4 February

If you’re interested in exhibiting your artwork but aren’t sure where to begin, this workshop is for you. We’ll explore the various types of galleries and art spaces available for artists in KW and beyond and provide guidance on how to approach them professionally. This introduction to the structure and protocols of the Canadian art gallery system will help you save time, effort, and money in your search for exhibition opportunities.

Portfolio Development
18 February

This workshop focuses on the fundamentals of developing an artist portfolio and crafting an exhibition proposal for non-profit galleries, artist-run centers, and community art spaces. Participants are encouraged to submit a draft exhibition proposal in advance if desired.

Writing an Artist Statement
4 March

Join us for a 45-minute presentation that explores the differences between various forms of art writing, including biographies, artist statements, and project proposals, with a brief discussion on CVs as well. Following this introduction, we will provide advice on how to write an artist statement. The session will culminate in a practical exercise where you will begin writing your own statement and participate in a roundtable read-aloud for feedback.

Branding and Promoting Work
18 March

Discover the essential steps to establish and enhance your personal brand as a visual artist while developing a comprehensive marketing strategy tailored to your unique style and vision. Learn effective techniques for showcasing your artwork, connecting with your target audience, and building a recognizable presence in the art community.

Taxes for Artists
1 April

This workshop will offer attendees an overview of filing taxes as a self-employed visual artist. It will cover basic filing tips, how to organize records, information on HST and GST, eligible business expenses, and ways to advantageously use RRSPs.
