Culture Talks 2022 continues conversations between artists, architects, designers, city builders and urbanists shining a light on exemplary buildings and public art projects, and exploring the future role of artists and architects as cultural placemakers.

Public City Architecture is a critical design studio practicing architecture in Manitoba and Ontario and landscape architecture in Manitoba, Ontario and Alberta. Known for a collaborative and inclusive approach to design, people and context, the organization is committed to cross pollination of ideas and expertise. Their expertise includes architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, public art, public engagement and indigenous design consultation in a single hybrid practice.  

Peter Sampson, OAA MAA AAA FRAIC, is interested in the pleasure of making and inhabiting architecture that is bold, beautiful and balances itself within its natural, human, and economic contexts. As the co-founder and principal architect of Public City, Peter has extensive experience as an architect, business owner and teacher having taught architecture at Universities of Toronto, Waterloo, and Manitoba. In 2008, Peter established his own firm and in 2016, restructured Public City into a trans-disciplinary practice that works seamlessly across architecture and landscape architecture with his partner, Liz Wreford. The work of their award-winning practice was published in Canadian Architecture, Evolving a Cultural Identity. Peter was elected to the Royal Canadian Institute of Architecture’s College of Fellows and has served as a juror of the Canadian Architect Awards and AIA Alaska Awards.   

Liz Wreford, OALA MALA SALA AALA CSLA, is a landscape architect whose work contributes to public spaces that are joyful, celebratory, and designed to shape identity. As the co-founder and principal landscape architect of Public City, Liz has over twenty years of experience as a landscape architect, business owner, teacher, mentor, and public artist. She has worked in Canada, the United States and Australia on private, commercial, and institutional commissions. Passionate about design and community, Liz founded the Prairie Chapter of Building Equality in Architecture to advance excellence and diversity across city-building professions in the West. Liz has taught at the Universities of Manitoba and Toronto. She currently sits on the Board of the Winnipeg Arts Council and is the Chair of its Public Art Committee.
